Shifting the narrative

Opportunities for refugees to access university are limited because there is a mismatch between the resources required and the resources available to fund opportunities. New sources of finance need to be generated.

We want to shift the narrative to highlight the opportunities that come from investing in refugee university access. We do this in three ways:

  1. Highlighting opportunities of improving refugee access to university: For bilataral and multilateral development actors, refugee university access achieves goals on school student retention, gender equality, irregular migration, community cohesion, and labour market needs. For ‘global universities’, it can meet ambitions for social impact and equity; develop academic returns in research, networks and course quality; and increase awareness and partnerships in emerging education markets.
  2. Elevating the image and voice of young refugees: their views are often not heard in spaces where decisions are made that affect them. Our advocacy highlights the needs and challenges as identified by young refugees, and promotes a positive image of refugees as students and graduates, shifting the perceptions towards the talents of refugees and opportunities of investing in them.
  3. Changing cost drivers of refugee university access: cost reduction at scale will often require national policy change. We build on our experience of how best to reach refugee communities for TE, the expertise of the refugee youth who lead our programme, and using data to highlight challenges that could be affecting refugee and host community students.
